Athenta Technologies Chairman, Teevra Bose, In a Panel discussion in CII. Analyzing the smart cities projects in India. He suggested all stake holders to wake up, and plan better. Many cities have invested heavily in multiple technologies. But have they really made the cities smart. Is the community more safer, steadier, than before. Can the city officials’ access and analyse a massive amount of information and easily glean meaningful, actionable insights.
When a city can monitor real-time operations, service levels rise quickly. This would be helped further with proactive and predictive analytics.
Teevra, educating the customer on power utilisation in a datacenter.
Teevra shed light on how to manage the PUE in a better way, just by repositioning a few racks. The main idea behind this was to appropriate distribution of cooling by the air conditioners to the racks Cooling should be proportional to Heat dissipated by the equipments on the racks.
He also emphasized in a big way to combine Information Technology (IT) and (OT) Infrastructure of a datacenter, so that it can be managed by a single platform. Its only a cohesive management, which can enhance the efficiency of the DC, while lowering PUE. This process would also bring down the speed in root cause analysis (RCA) of any problem, occurred in the datacenter.
The great wall of divide in Datacenters world over.
The great wall of divide in Datacenters world over
Though people realize that there is a huge Impact of IT infrastructure on the NON IT infrastructure and vice versa, people are not able to break this great wall of divide.
The great wall created between the Infrastructure team and the IT team within the same datacenter (DC) organization, has been used well by various vendors on both sides of the divide. They sold overlapping tools. Resultant: Ultimately none worked…
Infact organizations like Gartners also got confused. (Had all kinds of players in their DCIM quadrant till 2017) Even after they realized this slip/error, they stopped endorsing the DCIM space further, but didn’t correct the situation. Post the Jargons “DCIE” and “PUE”, which respectively mean “Datacenter Infrastructure efficiency” and “Power utilization efficiency”, people should realize, that ONLY a singular and cohesive platform can manage and make a datacenter more efficient.
This divide has spread across the world with the largest datacenters across falling to its prey. This successfully disallowed the teams of the same organization not to share their plans/forecasts with each other. Resulting into lack of efficiency and huge losses to the organizations.,
The tech teams, are still thinking independently and get independent consultants and products for each side of the divide. ONLY to get overlapping solutions. Resulting in additional time taken, more money spend, lost efficiency, and not adequate right solution
The silo based approach, has become a “norm” now. Here, let me draw a parallel with hospitals and explain. To manage a patient well, we would need pathological opinion, clinical opinion and possibly Radiological opinion. Since, the idea is to relieve the patient of the ailment as soon as possible. And not divide these independent and large medical specializations to act separately
Let’s focus on a few situations and see, if either of the teams could have given a sure answer to the questions below individually –
Service Providers – Can both teams answer the below questions independently –
1. Acquisition of new customers vs power required on the racks ? 2. Racks dissipating more heat with sudden increase in IT computing. Which ones and when ? 3. Who decides for IOT equipments in the DC ? 4. 4. Do we have free space information on rack as per power required, heat dissipated and space availability? Which tool are we using? 5. Questions of Virtualization of applications and moving few applications to the cloud 6. Old IT equipments in the DC are no more adequate to take care of current applications
And the larger question – What kind of dashboards should we have in our control room, for better management of the Datacenter ?
